Escalating Conflict Between Israel and Hezbollah
The Israeli military has escalated its airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon as cross-border hostilities intensify. Israel has warned civilians to distance themselves from areas where Hezbollah operates, indicating that the attacks will be more extensive in the coming days. These developments come as Hezbollah launched 150 rockets into Israeli territory over the weekend, causing significant damage in northern Israel.
Hezbollah’s Retaliation Deepens Conflict
Over the weekend, Hezbollah launched several rockets into northern Israel, targeting the city of Haifa and other locations. In response, Israel’s Defence Forces (IDF) initiated airstrikes on southern Lebanon, aiming to cripple Hezbollah’s rocket capabilities. The IDF claims to have destroyed a significant number of rocket launchers, further deepening the conflict as both sides show no signs of backing down.
Warnings Issued to Lebanese Civilians
Israeli authorities have urged Lebanese civilians to evacuate areas near Hezbollah targets, citing safety concerns. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesperson, reiterated that Israel will continue these airstrikes to ensure the safety of its northern residents. Israel’s goal is to diminish Hezbollah’s military presence near the border and potentially pave the way for a ground incursion into southern Lebanon.
US Concerns Over Conflict Escalation
US President Joe Biden has expressed concern over the growing conflict, stating that the US will do everything in its power to prevent a wider regional escalation. The Hezbollah-Israel conflict has captured global attention, raising fears that neighbouring countries may enter the fighting. Backed by Iran, Hezbollah vows to continue its offensive until Gaza achieves a ceasefire.
Hezbollah’s ‘Open-Ended Battle of Reckoning’
Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, announced that the group now engages in an “open-ended battle of reckoning” with Israel. During a funeral for a top Hezbollah commander, Qassem stressed that Israel’s strikes will not deter the group, and they will continue their operations. This defiant stance suggests the conflict is unlikely to de-escalate soon.
Fears of a Broader Regional Conflict
As Israel continues its airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, there are growing concerns that the conflict could spread beyond the immediate region. Recent missile launches by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq indicate that this conflict may not remain contained between Israel and Lebanon. Both sides are bracing for further violence as diplomatic efforts to broker peace remain stagnant.
