Israel’s military has intensified airstrikes on southern Lebanon, signalling a potential ground invasion. According to Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi, the strikes aim to degrade Hezbollah’s capabilities and prepare the ground for troops to enter Lebanese territory. This escalation follows weeks of cross-border fire between Israel and Hezbollah, which has displaced thousands of civilians in both countries.
Airstrikes Escalate Amid Growing Tensions
Israel launched a new wave of “extensive” airstrikes across southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley, killing 51 people, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The United Nations reports over 90,000 people displaced since Monday as Israeli forces target Hezbollah positions. Halevi confirmed that the military is “preparing the ground” for possible troop entry to neutralise the Hezbollah threat.
Hezbollah Fires First Missile at Tel Aviv
For the first time, Hezbollah launched a ballistic missile toward Tel Aviv, which Israel successfully intercepted. The missile marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, signalling that Hezbollah remains a formidable force despite extensive airstrikes. Hezbollah claims it is resisting Israeli “aggression” and acting in solidarity with Palestinians, while Israel insists its military actions aim to eliminate Hezbollah’s threat to its citizens.
Civilians Displaced as Conflict Intensifies
The humanitarian toll continues to mount as thousands flee southern Lebanon. Civilians are reportedly sleeping on roadsides as they escape Israeli airstrikes. Aid agencies have struggled to reach the affected areas due to blocked roads and ongoing bombardments. Lebanon’s hospitals are overwhelmed, and the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, with medical supplies running out.
Israeli Leadership Signals Invasion
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reinforced the military’s position, stating that Hezbollah is being hit with “blows it never imagined.” He pledged to return displaced Israeli residents to their homes and hinted that further military action may be necessary to achieve this goal. Netanyahu’s remarks, alongside Halevi’s briefing, suggest that a ground invasion could be imminent to fulfil Israel’s war objectives.
Diplomatic Efforts Fall Short
Despite rising tensions, the US and France are working on ceasefire proposals to prevent further escalation. However, significant progress has yet to be made. Hezbollah’s missile strike on Tel Aviv and Israel’s continued airstrikes suggest that a diplomatic solution remains distant as both sides prepare for a possible ground conflict.
