Netanyahu Reaffirms Confidence in Victory
On Sunday, Netanyahu assured the Israeli military of an impending victory after the Hamas attack a year ago. Israel continues battling militants in Gaza and Lebanon. Netanyahu emphasised that Israel has “completely transformed reality” since the attack. He indicated Israel is preparing to launch a major strike against Iran amidst escalating violence.
Israel Battles Hamas and Hezbollah
Since the October 7 attack by Palestinian militants, Israel has been engaged in two simultaneous wars—against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel’s army chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, claimed the military wing of Hamas had been significantly weakened. Yet, despite efforts to neutralise Hamas, Israeli forces have encountered militants regrouping in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli military action has intensified against Hezbollah in Lebanon, leading to increased tension with Iran.
Rising Death Toll and Displacement in Gaza
The military offensive in Gaza has resulted in over 41,000 deaths, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Most victims are civilians, and Gaza’s population faces mass displacement. The destruction of homes and infrastructure has contributed to the crisis. In northern Gaza, the Israeli military has encircled the Jabaliya area, where Hamas has reportedly been rebuilding despite sustained airstrikes.
Lebanon and Iran Face Israeli Retaliation
As fighting escalates in Lebanon, Israeli forces have been conducting ground operations to suppress Hezbollah rocket fire. Israeli officials have also warned of an impending retaliation against Iran, which has launched missiles at Israel in response to the killing of militant leaders. Israeli airstrikes have continued across Lebanon, with recent reports of strikes on Hezbollah’s stronghold in Beirut, killing several people.
Calls for Ceasefire Grow Internationally
International leaders, including those from Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq, have called for a ceasefire as the region faces the threat of further instability. Despite these appeals, mediation efforts have failed to secure a truce or a deal to release hostages held by Hamas. Netanyahu, however, has maintained that Israel’s actions in Lebanon will ultimately bring peace and security to the region.
Global Protests and Diplomatic Pressure
As the anniversary of the October 7 attack approaches, protests across the globe have called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. While diplomatic pressure mounts, critics of Netanyahu accuse him of obstructing efforts to reach a peace deal. In the meantime, Israel remains on high alert, preparing for potential attacks on its home front.
