Israeli Airstrike in Lebanon Kills Senior Hezbollah Commander

Hezbollah Commander Targeted

An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon has resulted in the death of Mohammed Nimah Nasser, a senior commander of Hezbollah. The Iran-backed group retaliated with a substantial rocket attack against Israel, escalating the ongoing conflict.

Hezbollah’s Retaliation

In response to the assassination, Hezbollah launched 100 rockets and missiles targeting Israeli military positions. The Israeli military reported that some projectiles landed in open areas, sparking fires but causing no injuries. Nasser, who commanded Hezbollah’s Aziz Unit, was accused by Israel of directing numerous terror attacks from southwestern Lebanon.

Diplomatic Efforts for De-escalation

The killing of Nasser follows the death of Taleb Sami Abdullah, another Hezbollah commander, whose assassination last month led to a significant rocket barrage into northern Israel. Since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October, there have been daily exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border, prompting diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader war.

Hezbollah’s Position and Warnings

Hezbollah has stated that their actions support the Palestinian group Hamas, also backed by Iran. Both Hezbollah and Hamas are designated as terrorist organisations by Israel, the UK, and other countries. Israeli officials have warned they will use military force if necessary to restore security along the northern border.

Statements from Defence Minister

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant stressed the country’s readiness to act decisively if diplomacy fails. “We prefer an arrangement, but if reality forces us, we will know how to fight,” he said, highlighting Israel’s commitment to maintaining security.

Impact on Civilians

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Over 400 people, mostly Hezbollah fighters, have been reported killed in Lebanon, while 25 people, primarily soldiers, have died in Israel. Tens of thousands from both sides of the border have been displaced due to the violence.
