Hundreds of Lebanese residents are fleeing into Syria on foot after an Israeli air strike destroyed a key road at the Masnaa border crossing. The airstrike, which Israel claims targeted Hezbollah weapon smuggling routes, has made vehicle access impossible, forcing displaced people to carry their belongings across the rubble.
Major Border Route Destroyed
The Israeli military struck the Masnaa crossing overnight, leaving a four-metre crater and cutting off one of the main routes used by people escaping the escalating conflict. Despite the destruction, families, including women and children, continue to make the journey on foot, as images show them navigating through the debris.
Hezbollah Targets and Civilian Impact
Israel has stated that the strike was aimed at Hezbollah infrastructure used to smuggle weapons into Lebanon. However, aid workers in the region warn that the destruction is hindering the movement of food and humanitarian supplies, further exacerbating the crisis for the thousands of civilians trying to flee the conflict.
Humanitarian Crisis Worsens
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, the past 24 hours have seen 37 deaths in Israeli attacks, with the total death toll now exceeding 2,000 since last October. Samar El Yassir, a country director for American Near East Refugee Aid, described the situation as a “humanitarian crisis,” with Lebanon unprepared for the growing displacement.
Evacuation Warnings and Continued Strikes
Israel has issued evacuation orders to more than 30 villages in southern Lebanon, advising residents to move north of the Awali River. Meanwhile, rockets continue to be fired from Lebanon into Israel, intensifying fears of further escalation. As Israeli ground forces continue operations, civilians face increasing difficulty in accessing safety and basic supplies.
International Responses and Concerns
International organisations are expressing concern over the deteriorating situation in Lebanon. With the destruction of key infrastructure, including hospitals and supply routes, there are growing calls for international intervention to prevent further civilian casualties and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
