Israel’s Actions on Rafah Assessed by US

Israel’s Actions Under Scrutiny

The US does not consider Israel’s actions on Rafah, southern Gaza, a full-scale invasion, according to White House spokesman John Kirby. This statement comes after Israeli forces advanced into the city and seized a strategic hill near the Egypt border. President Joe Biden had earlier warned of limiting arms supplies if Israel entered Rafah’s densely populated areas.

Biden’s Conditions on Weapon Supplies

President Biden has made it clear that weapons supplies to Israel would be restricted if their operations moved into Rafah’s population centres. Despite recent advancements, Kirby noted that Israel has not violated this condition, as they have not engaged in large-scale ground operations within the city.

Casualty Concerns and Investigations

Following an Israeli strike on a displaced persons camp in Rafah that killed at least 45 Palestinians, many of whom were women and children, Kirby described the resulting images as “heartbreaking”. Israel claimed the strike targeted senior Hamas officials and suggested the ensuing fire was caused by a nearby Hamas weapons store. The US State Department has called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Regional and International Reactions

The strike has sparked outrage among regional governments, with Egypt and Qatar condemning the attack as a violation of international law. Jordan and Saudi Arabia have also criticised Israel, accusing it of ongoing war crimes. The UN reports that around a million people have fled the fighting in Rafah, with several hundred thousand still sheltering in the city.

Humanitarian Impact and Military Strategy

Despite the humanitarian concerns, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue operations in Rafah. The Israeli Defense Forces began targeted ground operations in early May, pushing into eastern and central areas while advancing along the border with Egypt. Netanyahu maintains that taking control of Rafah is crucial for victory against Hamas.

Future Implications and US Position

The Biden administration faces increasing pressure to ensure that Israel minimises the humanitarian impact of its operations. Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen has urged a pause in military assistance until Israel meets all of Biden’s conditions, including the delivery of humanitarian aid. The US continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasising the need for accountability and protection of civilian lives.
