Kano State Against LGBTQ, Same-Sex Marriage Advocates

Governor Orders Crackdown

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has instructed the Hisbah Board to take firm action against groups that are promoting and advocating for LGBTQ rights. This order is in response to increasing tensions surrounding activities allegedly supporting same-sex marriage in the state. Recently, the X space has been inundated with debates and discussions on the legalization of LGBTQ rights in Nigeria. Individuals are either advocating for, opposing, or maintaining a neutral stance on the issue.

Commissioner for Information Speaks Out

The Governor through his Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, confirmed the directives via a telephone interview on Monday. He stated that the activities of the group, known as Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality (WISE), violate the state’s moral standards and Shari’ah laws.

Firm Stance Against LGBTQ Activities

Governor Yusuf has made it clear that the state government will not tolerate any agreements or activities that promote LGBTQ rights, as they conflict with the norms and values of Kano’s predominantly Muslim population. Dantiye emphasized the governor’s disapproval, noting that any activities supporting LGBTQ rights are unacceptable in Kano.

Citizens’ Concerns Prompt Action

The government has received numerous complaints from citizens regarding groups promoting LGBTQ activities. In response, the governor has instructed the Hisbah Board to investigate these groups and take necessary actions. Legal measures will be pursued as appropriate to enforce the state’s stance.

Consultations with Religious Leaders

The state government is also engaging with religious leaders to address the issue comprehensively. These consultations aim to reinforce the state’s position against LGBTQ activities and ensure community support in upholding moral standards.
