In Ogun State, gunmen kidnap seven travelers along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, resulting in the death of one individual. Armed with AK-47 rifles, the assailants, numbering around seven, targeted the stretch between Ilisan, Ceplast industry, and Iperu junction. Despite the incident occurring on Sunday, the confirmation of the passenger’s death came from police authorities on Tuesday.
Categorizing the incident as a combination of armed robbery, murder, and kidnapping, Omolola Odutola, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, highlighted the severity of the situation. The gravity of the event was further underscored by a harrowing firsthand account provided by one of the victims in a widely circulated audio recording. The victim, identified as a driver en route to Lagos, recounted the terrifying experience of being stopped by the gunmen who used gunfire to halt their vehicles before coercing them into the nearby bushes.
In the distressing narration, the victim detailed the chaos that ensued as the armed assailants forced them into the bushes at gunpoint. This firsthand testimony sheds light on the brutal tactics employed by the perpetrators and the trauma inflicted upon the victims.
Detailing the encounter, the victim recalled, “The incident occurred around past five in the evening. They were heavily armed with AK-47 rifles, firing shots sporadically. They even fatally shot an individual inside a Lexus car.” Subsequently, the kidnappers seized approximately seven people, demanding money from them. Through negotiations and speaking in Hausa, the victim managed to secure his release after surrendering N103,000 and his phone.
Another driver disclosed that the kidnappers had extracted N120,000 from him before taking him captive. Although the two drivers were eventually released, the remaining five individuals remained in the kidnappers’ custody.
