Kursk Border Region: Russia Reclaims 10 Settlements

Russian Forces Reclaim Settlements

Russia’s defense ministry has announced that its forces have recaptured 10 settlements in the Kursk border region, which Ukrainian forces seized during a surprise incursion last month. The ministry stated that over two days, the “Units of the North” successfully reclaimed areas around Snagost, located on the western flank of the territory occupied by Ukraine since its campaign launched on August 6.

Ukraine Acknowledges Russian Counteractions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russia has begun counteroffensive operations. “Counter-offensive actions are going in line with our Ukrainian plan,” Zelensky remarked. A Ukrainian officer stationed in the Kursk region, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that the fighting is intense and admitted, “The situation is not in our favor as of now.”

Heavy Fighting and Strategic Movements

The initial indication of Russia’s counteroffensive came from Chechen special forces commander Maj Gen Apti Alaudinov, who claimed that six Ukrainian brigades suffered heavy casualties. Ukrainian forces have reportedly destroyed three bridges over the River Seym to hinder Russian advancement, but Russian troops managed to cross both the Seym and smaller rivers during their counterattack.

Ukraine’s Incursion Aimed to Distract

Ukraine’s offensive into the Kursk region appeared to be a strategic move to divert Russian attention from their push into eastern Ukraine. While Ukraine claims to have seized up to 1,300 sq km (500 sq miles) of Russian territory, Russian forces continue to make advances in eastern Ukraine, closing in on the strategic town of Pokrovsk.

Analysts Weigh In on Developments

Experts from the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War have stated that it’s too early to draw definitive conclusions about the scale and potential success of the Russian counterattacks. Russian military analyst Anatoly Matviychuk reported that more than 100 sq km of territory have been recaptured, disrupting Ukrainian supply lines into the Kursk region.

Continued Conflict and Regional Impact

As the conflict intensifies, Russian forces are just kilometers away from Pokrovsk and its neighboring town, Myrnohrad. In addition, a Russian drone attack wounded 14 people in the northern Ukrainian town of Konotop, a key hub for Ukraine’s Kursk campaign preparations. Power supplies in Konotop have been disrupted due to significant damage to energy infrastructure.
