Lagos Oro Festival Clarification Amidst Upcoming Protests

Government’s Stance on Religious Activities

The Lagos State Government, through Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, has explicitly given its clarification as it distanced itself from the rumored Oro festival scheduled for August 1 to 15, 2024. This period coincides with the planned #EndBadGovernance protests, prompting clarification from the state authorities.

Clarification on Social Media Rumors

The clarification came after a social media post by @lagospedia suggested that the Oro festival, a traditional Yoruba cultural event involving significant rituals, was set to take place in Lagos. The post stirred various reactions, necessitating an official response from the state government.

Equal Respect for All Religious Activities

In a telephone interview with The PUNCH, Akosile emphasized that the Lagos State Government does not interfere with religious activities, whether they are Muslim, Christian, or traditional Yoruba practices. He pointed out that traditional worshippers have the same rights as adherents of other religions to perform their rituals without government interference.

State’s Policy on Public Order

Further discussing the upcoming protests and the Oro festival, Akosile highlighted that the state government’s primary concern is maintaining public order and ensuring that all events, whether protests or religious activities, are conducted lawfully. He underscored the importance of not disrupting business or public peace in the state.

Learning from Past Protests

Referencing the #EndSARS protests from 2020, which resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, Akosile expressed the state’s determination to prevent a recurrence of such events. He stated that the government would take all necessary measures to maintain peace and order during the upcoming events.
