Lagos Speaker Impeachment Drama: Obasa Insists He Remains Speaker

Obasa Speaks on Removal by Lagos Lawmakers

Following the Speaker impeachment drama, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has spoken out for the first time following his removal, calling into question the constitutional validity of the process. Addressing a crowd of supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja GRA, Obasa insisted that he remains the legitimate Speaker until due process is observed.

Obasa dismissed allegations of corruption levied against him, labeling the claims of financial misappropriation as implausible. “If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it,” he stated firmly. Despite the upheaval, Obasa expressed confidence in the rule of law and hinted at a potential legal challenge, stating, “You will know; it’s just a matter of time.”

Allegations of Misconduct Rejected

The former Speaker addressed several allegations, including claims of constructing a gate for N16 billion and purchasing 40 Hilux vehicles for N40 billion. “Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with N16 billion? It is not the wall of Jericho,” he remarked. Obasa refuted the accusations as baseless, asserting, “I have not done anything wrong. I have been a lawmaker for over two decades and the longest-serving in the House.”

Obasa also alleged that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police led an invasion of the State Assembly during his impeachment. According to him, over 200 officers also surrounded his private residence, restricting his family’s movement. “This is not about me; it is about doing things the right way,” he declared.

A Call for Institutional Integrity

The embattled Speaker expressed concern over the reputation of the Lagos State House of Assembly, emphasizing the need to protect the institution’s image. “The Lagos State House of Assembly is above the common standard of excellence. We must not destroy it,” he stated. Obasa further appealed to the Governance Advisory Council and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure fairness and uphold the dignity of the state legislature.

Supporters Rally Behind Obasa

Despite the controversy, Obasa’s loyalists turned out in large numbers at the Speaker’s Lodge to show their support. He thanked them for their dedication, urging patience as he worked to clear his name. “I appreciate your support and resilience. This moment will pass, and we will emerge stronger,” he told the crowd.

Next Steps: Legal Action on the Horizon?

Obasa’s comments suggested that a legal battle might be imminent, though he stopped short of providing specific details. “I believe in fate, and I believe in justice,” he noted, hinting that he would not back down without ensuring that constitutional procedures were followed.

Governor and Stakeholders Urged to Intervene

As the political drama unfolds, Obasa has called on key stakeholders to mediate and resolve the situation amicably. He reiterated his commitment to serving his constituency and maintaining the integrity of the Lagos legislative process.
