LASTMA-Viju Officials Clash: Several Injured

In the bustling streets of Ikeja, Lagos, terrible clash erupted on Tuesday night as a fierce confrontation broke out between officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and employees of Viju Company. The tumultuous scene unfolded at the Oba Akran Avenue area, leaving behind a trail of multiple injuries and escalating tensions.

Eyewitness reports show the clash happening around midnight, with victims sustaining various wounds, including a reportedly shot Viju Company motorboy. Footage captures both LASTMA officials and Viju workers visibly bloodied on their hands, faces, and clothing.

Seyi, a Viju driver, explained that the altercation began when soldiers, LASTMA officials, and touts moved to impound their trucks. He described being stabbed in the hand while resisting, expressing astonishment at the soldier’s unexpected involvement.

Seyi’s account sheds light on the event, highlighting the sudden and violent escalation involving various authorities and workers.

Another Viju official, Issa Tijani, noted the extensive reach of the confrontation, extending beyond Viju Company to the surrounding neighborhood. Tijani expressed disbelief at the indiscriminate raid and exorbitant fines, questioning the fairness, especially considering the late-hour intrusion.

Despite their non-involvement in any altercation with LASTMA officials, drivers at Viju, like Ismalia Asuma, were recounted being attacked. Asuma depicted pandemonium as soldiers, task force members, and touts inflicted violence, causing injuries and gunfire amidst the chaos. As the confrontation intensified, individuals suffered injuries, and property damage ensued.

After the incident, LASTMA’s Adebayo Taofeeq clarified their actions were prompted by a resident petition concerning Viju milk trucks. Taofeeq outlined impounding 54 vehicles in response to the petition and emphasized conducting the operation without resorting to firearms. Moreover, Taofeeq highlighted the arrest of five individuals involved in the altercation and the confiscation of various weapons.
