Life in FCT Tough, Residents Struggling, Says Senator Kingibe

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has expressed concern over the growing hardship faced by residents of Abuja. Kingibe highlighted the struggles brought on by President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, noting that many residents are going hungry and struggling to make ends meet.

Economic Reforms Worsen Living Conditions

Speaking at the 8th Voice of Women Conference and Award in Abuja, Kingibe noted that life in the capital is becoming increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens. She shared that residents frequently approach her asking for money or food, but said she cannot fulfil every request. Instead, she focuses on advocating for reforms that could ease the financial burden, such as pushing for rent reforms that allow tenants to pay quarterly or yearly, rather than upfront for two years.

Efforts to Alleviate Poverty

Kingibe mentioned her efforts to ensure aid reaches those who need it most. She personally supervises distribution during empowerment initiatives, going directly to market women to avoid intermediaries. “I ensure the support goes to the right people, and I have evidence to show it,” she said.

Challenges of Being a Female Senator

As a female senator in a male-dominated National Assembly, Kingibe acknowledged the unique challenges she faces. She also clarified that many people mistakenly expect her to execute projects that fall under the jurisdiction of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Kingibe stressed that her role involves lobbying for essential services like water, healthcare, and infrastructure, rather than directly managing these projects.

Lobbying for Projects and Support

Despite these challenges, Kingibe continues to engage with federal ministries and major companies like Google and Microsoft to provide opportunities for women entrepreneurs. She highlighted her commitment to ensuring her constituents benefit from improved infrastructure, even if she cannot personally meet every voter.
