Lion Kills Zoo Worker at Obasanjo Library

Tragic Death of Lion Handler in Abeokuta

A 35-year-old zoo worker tragically lost his life on Saturday after being attacked by a lion at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Zoo in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The worker, identified as Babaji Daule, was a trained lion handler from Bauchi State. Reports indicate that he forgot to properly secure the lion’s enclosure before attempting to feed the animal.

Fatal Attack by Escaped Lion

The incident unfolded when the lion escaped from its enclosure, fatally mauling Daule. The lion inflicted severe injuries on the handler’s neck, leading to his death. It was later confirmed that the failure to secure the enclosure allowed the animal to attack.

Authorities Confirm Incident

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the tragic event in a statement on Sunday. According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the lion was shot to release its grip on Daule. Despite the swift response, the handler’s injuries were fatal, and his body was taken to the Ijaye General Hospital mortuary.

Park Management Speaks on the Incident

The park’s management disclosed that the incident occurred outside the usual feeding routine. Daule had reportedly agreed to demonstrate the feeding process for some late guests after the zoo had closed. Unfortunately, this decision led to the tragic attack. The management confirmed that the lion had to be put down to prevent further harm.

Safety Concerns Raised

The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at the Olusegun Obasanjo Library Zoo. The negligence in securing the enclosure is under investigation, with authorities looking into potential lapses in zoo safety standards. The tragic death highlights the need for stringent safety measures when handling wild animals.
