Election Boycott Announcement
Calistus Ihejiagwa announced the Labour Party’s non-participation in the September 21, 2024, local government elections in Imo State. The decision, revealed at a stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri, cited concerns over the electoral process’s fairness. The State Independent Electoral Commission, controlled by the All Progressive Congress, manages this process.
Concerns Over Electoral Integrity
Ihejiagwa expressed skepticism regarding the integrity of the elections conducted by the state’s electoral commission. He argued that participating in such a process, deemed neither fair nor transparent, would be a futile expenditure of resources and time. The Labour Party’s mistrust stems from perceived partiality and the commission’s close ties with the current state government.
Supreme Court Appeal and Political Strategy
The Labour Party is awaiting a Supreme Court decision on the legitimacy of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s election victory on November 11, 2023. They challenge the authenticity of Uzodimma’s win, anticipating a ruling that may terminate his tenure. Ihejiagwa asserts the party believes Uzodimma holds a “stolen mandate.”
Strengthening Party Infrastructure
At the meeting, Ihejiagwa encouraged party members to adhere to Labour Party principles and engage in the membership revalidation process. He called for active participation across all 27 local government areas of the state. Ihejiagwa stressed that the Labour Party is the public’s best option to surmount the economic difficulties. He attributed these hardships to the policies of the current APC administration.
National Support and Future Goals
Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, representing the National Chairman, emphasized the Labour Party’s vital role in Nigeria’s future at the meeting. He spotlighted the party’s strong grassroots support and its role as a major opposition force in Imo State. Ahanotu underscored the party’s readiness to challenge the status quo and promote national economic recovery.
Party Unity and Membership Drive
Efforts to fortify the party’s local structures include amendments to their constitution and the introduction of uniquely customized membership cards for better organization and identification at the grassroots level. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to solidify the Labour Party’s influence and prepare for future electoral challenges.
