Governors Enhance Farm Security
On Wednesday, the South-West Governors took a major step towards agricultural development by agreeing to bolster farm security. They decided to create specialised units within the Amotekun corps to safeguard farming activities. This resolution emerged from a roundtable on food security hosted by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Meeting of Key Agriculture Stakeholders
The meeting saw the attendance of Commissioners for Agriculture from Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo states. Notably present were Ebenezer Boluwade, Bolu Owotomo, Olayato Aribo, Babatola Faseru, and Olasunkanmi Olaleye. Additionally, representing Lagos State was Mr. Emmanuel Audu, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Call for Immediate Action
The Director General, Seye Oyeleye, highlighted the need to counter false claims about the region’s food production capabilities. Consequently, he urged commissioners to create practical recommendations for state governors to swiftly implement within the coming months.
Comprehensive Agricultural Boost
The resolutions aimed at boosting agriculture included massive land clearing, enhanced security, and large-scale production of crops like maize. Additionally, they discussed revitalising dams for irrigation, improving mechanisation, adopting cluster farming, expanding input distribution, and creating an electronic agriculture database.
Commitment to Agricultural Revival
The meeting also featured Dr. Theophilus Onadeko, Managing Director of the South-West Agriculture Company, SWAgCo, and Chief Kola Akosile from NACCIMA. The governors reiterated their commitment to industrialisation and agricultural revival in the region during their recent forum in Lagos.
Support for Regional Development
The governors praised the House of Representatives and the South-West Caucus for their efforts in passing the South-West Development Commission Bill. They also commended President Bola Tinubu for the groundbreaking of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the proposed Lagos to Sokoto road, urging the Federal Government to rehabilitate other federal roads in the region.
