Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim has officially accepted the role of head coach at Manchester United following a direct “now or never” ultimatum. Amorim, who was managing Sporting Lisbon, will officially begin his duties at Old Trafford on 11 November. He joins the club under a contract until 2027, becoming the sixth permanent manager since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Amorim replaces Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed after a disappointing start to the season, leaving United struggling in the lower half of the Premier League table.
United’s Urgent Appeal for Success
United’s push for Amorim followed Ten Hag’s sacking due to inconsistent performances. Speaking about the decision, Amorim revealed he initially requested to join at the season’s end. However, the Manchester club insisted on immediate action, pressing Amorim to seize the opportunity or risk losing it. “It was a decision that would change my life,” Amorim remarked, noting the three-day window he had to decide.
Temporary Manager Until November Start
Ruud van Nistelrooy will oversee Manchester United’s matches until Amorim’s arrival. Known for his success at Sporting Lisbon, where he clinched two league titles, Amorim is expected to restore United’s competitive edge in England and Europe. United’s management described him as “one of the most exciting young coaches” on the European scene, affirming their confidence in his leadership skills.
Amorim’s Vision for United
Amorim acknowledged his mixed emotions over leaving Sporting but expressed enthusiasm for taking on the Manchester United challenge. He confirmed he had been approached by other clubs, including one offering a substantially higher salary. However, he was drawn to Manchester United’s legacy and the unique opportunities it offers for innovation in his coaching style.
Preparing for a Fresh Start
Sporting Lisbon fans showed bittersweet support for Amorim after his recent 5-1 victory over Estrela, marking his 10th consecutive league win. While some fans expressed disappointment, others celebrated his achievements and the upcoming opportunity. Amorim’s final game for Sporting will be against Braga on 10 November, after which he will begin his tenure at United with a fixture against Ipswich on 24 November.
Manchester United’s Continued Quest for Glory
Following years of fluctuating performances since Ferguson’s departure, United hopes Amorim’s arrival will herald a new era. United’s board, who paid €11 million to Sporting for Amorim’s release, is optimistic that his experience and fresh approach will help them reclaim a dominant position in English football.
