Minister Criticizes ‘Reckless’ Statement
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has strongly criticized former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his remarks that Nigerian politicians are in power to steal, kill, and retain control. Matawalle described the comments as inflammatory and a threat to national unity.
Amaechi made the controversial statement during a two-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, emphasizing that political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, would not easily relinquish power to the younger generation. His speech sparked widespread debate, with critics questioning the implications of his assertions.
Power Must Be Earned, Not Taken by Force—Matawalle
Reacting to the remarks in a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, Matawalle denounced the former governor’s claims. He stated that leadership positions in Nigeria are attained through democratic processes, not violence or lawlessness. He emphasized that President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to peace, security, and democratic values.
“It is both reckless and dangerous for a former public official to make such divisive statements. At a time when we are striving to consolidate national unity, no responsible leader should be fanning the flames of unrest,” Matawalle said.
Security Agencies on High Alert
The Defence Minister further warned against rhetoric that could incite violence. He assured Nigerians that security agencies are monitoring political developments closely and would take action against anyone attempting to destabilize the country.
“Let me make it clear: security operatives are on high alert. Any individual or group found inciting violence or threatening Nigeria’s stability will face the full force of the law. We will not tolerate subversive rhetoric designed to undermine national unity,” Matawalle warned.
Political Responsibility and Public Trust
Political analysts have weighed in on the controversy, urging politicians to exercise caution in their statements. They stress that responsible leadership requires fostering trust, rather than instilling fear and division among citizens. Many believe that while Nigeria’s political landscape has its challenges, addressing them should be done constructively.
Call for Constructive Dialogue
Matawalle reiterated the government’s commitment to national peace and urged politicians to contribute positively to governance. He encouraged political actors to engage in discussions that promote democracy rather than statements that could create unnecessary tension.
“The government will not fold its arms while individuals spread misinformation and fuel discord. Our focus remains on fostering a safe, unified, and democratic Nigeria,” he concluded.
