Real Madrid’s Decision
Kylian Mbappe, the France striker, revealed that his new club Real Madrid will not allow him to participate in the Paris Olympics this summer. Despite his desire to play in his home Games, Real Madrid’s stance led to his exclusion from France’s provisional Olympic squad announced on 3 June.
Contract and Club Policies
Mbappe, who will join Real Madrid on a free transfer after his Paris St-Germain contract expires on 30 June, explained the club’s position. Real Madrid stipulated that any player involved in Euro 2024 could not play in the Olympics. As a result, Mbappe will not be part of the Olympic squad.
Mbappe’s Reaction
Mbappe expressed understanding of the club’s decision, acknowledging that starting with a new team in September means the Olympics is not the best way to begin his journey with Real Madrid. Consequently, he wished the French team success in the Games and committed to supporting them as a spectator.
Olympic and Euro Schedules
The men’s Olympic football competition kicks off on 24 July, just ten days after the Euro 2024 final, and concludes on 9 August, shortly before the start of the La Liga season. Each nation can include three over-age players in their under-23 squads, and France is considered a strong contender for the Olympic gold.
France’s Euro Aspirations
France, a two-time European champion, is also among the favourites to win Euro 2024. Manager Didier Deschamps aims to become the second person to win the Euros both as a player and a manager, following Germany’s Berti Vogts. The French team will begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Austria in Dusseldorf.
Support from Mbappe
Mbappe, with an impressive record of 47 goals in 79 games for France, will miss the Olympics but remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. He plans to watch every game and hopes his teammates will bring home the gold medal.
