Promoting Gender Equality
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has underscored men’s crucial roles in ending domestic and sexual violence. The agency stressed the importance of collective action to foster a safer society, urging community leaders and residents to champion gender equality initiatives.
Engaging Men in Marital Partnerships
During a cooking competition involving men, Executive Secretary of DSVA, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, stressed the importance of men’s roles in promoting partnerships in marriages. Represented by Ms. Odumbo Adetoun, Vivour-Adeniyi explained that initiatives like these address gender stereotypes and encourage shared responsibilities at home.
Challenging Gender Stereotypes
Held at Ikola Market in Ipaja, the event titled “Man Wey Sabi” aimed to challenge traditional gender roles. Sponsored by Power Oil Nigeria Limited, the competition showcased men’s culinary skills and spread messages about the importance of men’s involvement in childcare and marital partnership.
Acknowledging Government Support
The Iyaloja of Ikola Market, Birikisu Lawal, expressed gratitude towards Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration. She appreciated the government’s efforts in creating an environment where both genders can thrive equally and contribute to societal development.
Rising Reports of Domestic Violence
In May, the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation reported receiving 662 cases of domestic and sexual violence within a year. This statistic underscores the urgency for continued efforts and community involvement to tackle these issues effectively.
Future Initiatives and Recommendations
The DSVA continues to urge the community to break down gender stereotypes and support initiatives that foster equality. As men take on more active roles in domestic responsibilities, the agency hopes to see a significant reduction in domestic violence incidents.
