In a historic election, Claudia Sheinbaum has become Mexico’s first female president. The official electoral authority revealed preliminary results showing Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City, securing 58% to 60% of the vote. This victory places her approximately 30 percentage points ahead of her main competitor, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez.
Sheinbaum will assume office on 1 October, succeeding her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In her victory speech, Sheinbaum emphasised her commitment to continuing López Obrador’s popular welfare programmes, promising continuity and further advancements. She expressed her pride in becoming the first woman president of Mexico, highlighting this achievement as a milestone for all women in the country.
In her victory speech, Sheinbaum celebrated the historic significance of her election. She declared, “For the first time in 200 years, I will become the first woman president of Mexico.” Assuring the public of her dedication, she stated, “I won’t fail you.” She also graciously thanked her opponent, Gálvez, for conceding. This acknowledgment underscored the importance of unity and progress as she prepares to take office.
Sheinbaum’s background as an energy scientist and her tenure as Mexico City’s mayor played a crucial role in her journey to the presidency. Her diverse heritage, with Jewish maternal grandparents from Bulgaria and paternal grandparents from Lithuania, adds to her unique story. Before politics, Sheinbaum had a notable career in science, specialising in energy consumption and climate change.
The election was a turning point for women’s political representation in Mexico. Voters also elected Congress members, governors in eight states, the head of Mexico City’s government, and numerous local officials. Unfortunately, the campaign was marred by violence, with over 20 local candidates killed, highlighting the ongoing challenge of tackling crime in the country.
Sheinbaum’s presidency promises to address the roots of violence through welfare programmes, while also maintaining a strong relationship with the United States. Moreover, with the backing of popular President López Obrador, her campaign received a significant boost. This support reflects public endorsement for continuing efforts to alleviate poverty. Transitioning to her new role, Sheinbaum aims to build on the successes of her predecessor and further strengthen the nation’s socio-economic fabric.
