Minimum Wage Deadline: Labour Awaits Tinubu’s Decision

Labour Leaders Anxiously Await Presidential Decision

Today marks a crucial deadline for the conclusion of the new minimum wage talks between the Federal Government and Organised Labour. Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are eagerly awaiting President Bola Tinubu’s decision on their proposed N250,000 minimum wage.

Tripartite Committee Reaches Consensus

Last Friday, the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage concluded its meetings. The Federal Government and the Organized Private Sector agreed on N62,000, while Labour insisted on N250,000. The Nigeria Governors Forum, however, stated that any minimum wage above N60,000 was unsustainable.

Labour Leaders Head to Geneva

As the nation awaits the president’s decision, labour leaders, including NLC President Joe Ajaero, have left for a labour conference organised by the International Labour Organisation in Geneva. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a top NLC official highlighted the importance of the president’s decision and the upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

President’s Decision Crucial

“We have submitted the report to the president and are waiting for his decision,” said a top NLC official. “Before we can hold a NEC meeting, we must return from Geneva. We are cautious to avoid the government accusing Labour of inciting citizens against it.”

Strike Action Pending Decision

Organised Labour, comprising NLC and TUC, recently staged a two-day nationwide strike to demand a new minimum wage and reverse the electricity tariff hike. The strike was suspended after Labour leaders signed a commitment with the Federal Government to resume negotiations and establish a new minimum wage within a week.

Government Prepares for New Wage Implementation

Following a directive from President Tinubu, the finance minister presented the cost implications of implementing the new minimum wage. The president is currently reviewing the proposal and is expected to make an official announcement soon.
