President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated meeting with labour union leaders regarding the minimum wage adjustment negotiation was postponed after an hour-long discussion at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The session, initially set to finalise the wage structure, will now continue next week.
Discussion Rather Than Negotiation
According to Nigerian Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, the meeting focused on discussions rather than outright negotiations. “It wasn’t a negotiation but a discussion,” Ajaero stated. He clarified that the session served to align on basic issues, with detailed negotiations postponed to the following week.
Economic Indices and Labour’s Stance
Trade Union Congress President Comrade Osifo highlighted that the meeting presented an opportunity to discuss the broader economic difficulties impacting Nigerians. Issues such as the eroding value of the naira and the subsequent effect on the cost of living were laid out before President Tinubu, emphasizing the urgent need for a revised wage framework.

The leaders of the organized labour expressed their intention to use this postponement to internalize the initial discussions and prepare for a more conclusive negotiation next week. “We will come back in one week’s time, and we will continue the meeting,” Osifo confirmed.
