Monthly Environmental Sanitation Reintroduced in Lagos

Governor Sanwo-Olu Approves Return

Due to recent flooding in Lagos caused by heavy rainfall, the state has emphasized the need for improved environmental management, leading to the reintroduction of the long-suspended monthly environmental sanitation exercise. On July 3, 2024, a ten-hour downpour led to significant disruptions, including a collapsed building in Mushin and widespread flooding in various areas.

Commissioner Announces Plan

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved this measure, and the State Executive Council has also endorsed it, aiming to enhance the city’s cleanliness. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, revealed that the monthly sanitation will resume in July. Governor Sanwo-Olu will make an official announcement soon, detailing the exercise’s schedule and implementation.

Historical Context

The government discontinued the monthly sanitation in 2016, citing the need for reforms to support a growing 24-hour economy. The exercise, which restricted movement for three hours on the last Saturday of each month, was no longer seen as effective.

Community Impact

The flooding affected daily life, halting business activities and preventing students from attending school. Areas such as Ikeja, Ogba, and Lagos Island were among the hardest hit, with residents and businesses facing substantial damage.

Looking Forward

With the reintroduction of monthly sanitation, the Lagos State Government aims to mitigate such issues and improve overall environmental conditions. The community and stakeholders eagerly await Governor Sanwo-Olu’s official announcement and the subsequent implementation of this initiative.
