Strengthened Border Controls Amid Health Crisis
In light of the recent Mpox outbreak, the Nigerian government has escalated its surveillance and screening efforts at all national entry points. This proactive measure aims to manage and possibly curb the spread of the disease within its borders.
Government’s Response to Mpox Spread
Professor Muhammad Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, announced the intensified measures during a press statement, highlighting the collaboration between the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the Nigeria Ports Health Services. These agencies are at the forefront, implementing rigorous screening processes to detect and respond to Mpox cases swiftly.
Historical Context and Preventative Measures
The resurgence of Mpox, specifically the Clade 1 strain known for its severity in past outbreaks, has prompted these actions. The government is adopting strategies akin to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to prevent a large-scale health crisis.
New Protocols for Travelers
As part of the heightened safety protocols, all travelers entering Nigeria must now complete an online health declaration form prior to their arrival. This complements the activation of infectious disease centres across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, ensuring a ready and robust response mechanism.
Public Health Recommendations
The Ministry also urges the public to adhere to strict hygiene practices. Regular hand washing and the use of hand sanitizers, especially after direct contact with potentially infected persons or animals, are recommended to minimize the risk of transmission.
Regional Impact and Global Concern
The declaration of a public health emergency by the Africa Centre for Disease Control underscores the gravity of the Mpox outbreak in Africa, with the Democratic Republic of Congo experiencing significant transmission rates. The situation remains critical as new cases continue to emerge across the continent, affecting public health and international travel.
The Nigerian government remains vigilant, adapting its strategies to the evolving situation to protect its citizens and prevent the spread of Mpox within and beyond its borders.
