Peter Obi of the Labour Party, in his tweet early today, celebrates the International Women’s Day.
He says today is set aside to celebrate the immense importance of women globally. He further honours the existence of women, stating their inevitable and necessary role in procreation.
“On this special day, I celebrate Nigerian women whose invaluable contributions significantly impact our nation’s growth and development,” he stated. “I appreciate the resilience, perseverance, tireless energy, and sacrifices of Nigerian women, who, despite challenges, embody hope for a better nation.”
As a man of statistics, Obi notes that women constitute 49.4% of Nigeria’s population, according to Country Meters. He states that “Empowering this significant portion can drastically transform the nation’s development, highlighting the importance of female empowerment.” For him, education is the ultimate empowerment tool, particularly for women, emphasising its critical role in societal progress. Furthermore, Obi states that the low female school enrolment rate in Nigeria is concerning and remains a significant issue to address.
According to Peter Obi, based on UNICEF reports, 50% of Nigerian girls do not acquire basic education, which is most important, and out of about 18 million out-of-school children, girls account for about 7.6 million. He not only decries the non-education of the girl child, but also the bias towards women in political positions and governance.
In conclusion, Obi praised the entrepreneurial spirit of women and suggested that such spirit when harnessed and supported, will greatly impact the economy and aid Nigeria’s journey from consumption to production. Obi concludes that the journey to the New Nigeria becomes even more Possible when women are empowered.
Happy International Women’s Day!
