NAFDAC Recalls Benylin Paediatrics Syrup

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a recall of Benylin Paediatrics Syrup, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, following recent toxicity findings. Laboratory analysis found an unacceptably high level of Diethylene glycol in the product, causing acute oral toxicity in laboratory animals.

NAFDAC’s website discloses the recall due to potential health risks posed by the contaminated syrup. Consuming diethylene glycol is toxic to humans and can result in fatal consequences due to its harmful effects. It poses significant health risks when ingested, causing severe organ damage and even death. Therefore, caution must be exercised to prevent any exposure to this hazardous substance. Symptoms of toxicity include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, altered mental state, and acute kidney injury.

The manufacturer produced the affected product, batch number 329304, in May 2021, and it is scheduled to expire this month, April 2024. Additionally, NAFDAC has urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of substandard or contaminated regulated products.

In light of the recall, NAFDAC emphasized the importance of obtaining medical products from authorized and licensed suppliers. Consumers should carefully check the authenticity and physical condition of medical products before using them. NAFDAC advises discontinuing the sale or use of recalled Benylin Paediatrics Syrup and submitting it to the nearest NAFDAC office. Additionally, NAFDAC advises individuals who experience adverse reactions after using the product to seek immediate medical attention from qualified healthcare professionals.
