NANS Emphasises Constructive Engagement Over Protests

NANS Advocates Dialogue Over Demonstration

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has taken a stance against protests in response to the recent fuel price hikes. Instead, NANS plans to engage in constructive dialogue with the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to explore ways to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs on students. The leadership aims to foster discussions that could lead to a reduction in fuel pump prices, emphasizing the need for peaceful negotiation over confrontation.

NANS Warns Against Protest Participation

During a press conference in Abuja, Comrade Bilal Kurfi, Chairman of the NANS Forum of Zonal Coordinators, advised students nationwide to refrain from participating in any protests. He expressed concerns that miscreants could hijack such actions, potentially leading to violence and disruption. Kurfi urged the student body to focus on dialogue and legal means to address their grievances rather than taking to the streets.

The Role of NANS in National Issues

Kurfi highlighted the association’s role as intellectuals and advocates for peaceful resolution rather than agitators. He stressed that engaging with the government and relevant stakeholders offers a more effective way to address issues like fuel price increases, which global economic conditions and governmental policies influence.

Addressing Misinformation and External Agitation

The chairman also addressed misinformation circulating about NANS organizing or endorsing protests. He clarified that NANS has not sanctioned any protests and warned against non-students posing as members to incite unrest. Kurfi emphasized the importance of unity and responsible activism within the student community.

NANS’s Commitment to Peaceful Engagement

NANS commits to maintaining a peaceful approach to advocacy, distancing itself from any actions that might compromise public safety or allow manipulation by political interests. The association continues to advocate for its members’ welfare while ensuring that their actions align with the broader goals of national stability and constructive dialogue.
