Nationwide Strike Imminent as Aviation Unions Join

Aviation Workers Halt Services

Nigerian aviation unions have decided to join the organised labour’s imminent nationwide strike to begin on the June 3. Initially, waiting for a directive from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), they however, directed their members to withdraw services at airports nationwide, following an emergency meeting held on the June 2.

Immediate Impact

The withdrawal of services which will be commencing by midnight on Monday, June 3, affects the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, and the Association, Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers.

Joint Statement Issued

In a joint statement, union leaders Comrade Ocheme Aba, Comrade Frances Akinjole, Comrade Abdul Rasaq Saidu, and Comrade Olayinka Abioye instructed all branches to comply with the strike directives.

International Flights Affected

Considering that many international flights to Nigeria are already in progress, the unions specified that the strike action at international terminals would commence on June 4, 2024. Furthermore, they emphasized the seriousness of this action and urged all aviation workers to comply without fail.

Ensuring Compliance

Union leaders directed all branch officers to ensure full compliance at all airports. They stressed that the strike was a critical struggle and necessary for addressing their demands.

Broader Context

This decision follows a broader call by organised labour for an indefinite strike due to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage offer above N60,000 and other unresolved issues.
