Impending Protests in Abuja
All university staffs, including members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions (NASU), are poised for a nationwide protest in Abuja today. Without any last-minute agreements, the demonstration will start at 8 am at Unity Fountain and conclude at the office of the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.
Background of the Protest
The Federal Government’s failure to pay four months of salaries withheld during their 2022 strike has triggered the protest. During that period, SSANU and NASU were on strike for four months, while the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) extended their strike to eight months.
Government’s Response and Promises
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive to pay the withheld salaries after the strike, SSANU and NASU members assert that their dues remain unpaid, unlike ASUU members who have received their salaries.
National and Regional Protests
Initially, the unions organized protests across all state chapters on July 9. Today’s protest in Abuja follows a national call to action, underscoring the unions’ continued dissatisfaction and demands for fair treatment.
Statements from Union Leadership
NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim reinforced the protest movement with a circular, following a two-week ultimatum they issued to the government in June to address their grievances.
