The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a tariff adjustment for telecom network operators, with rates set to rise by up to 50%. This marks the first increase since 2013, driven by escalating operational costs. The commission announced this decision on Monday, confirming that the new tariffs will remain within the limits established by its 2013 Cost Study.
A Step Towards Sustainable Telecom Operations
In its statement, the NCC acknowledged the financial pressures on telecom operators, who have been seeking higher rates to cover the rising cost of doing business. However, the increase was capped at 50%, much lower than the over 100% hike that some operators had initially requested. The NCC emphasized that the adjustment aims to close the gap between operational costs and current tariffs while ensuring that consumer services are not compromised.
Transparency and Fairness in Tariff Adjustments
The NCC ensured that tariff adjustments would follow the 2024 Guidance on Tariff Simplification, promoting transparency and fairness. Reuben Muoka stated that operators must educate consumers about the new tariffs and implement them transparently. Telecom companies are also required to demonstrate measurable improvements in service delivery as part of the adjustment.
Balancing Consumer Protection and Industry Sustainability
While acknowledging the financial strain on Nigerian households and businesses, the NCC stressed the need for a sustainable telecom industry. The commission emphasized that the adjustment would help maintain the infrastructure needed for improved services, better network quality, and wider coverage. It highlighted that Nigeria’s digital economy and indigenous suppliers are integral to the telecommunications ecosystem.
Extensive Consultations and Stakeholder Engagement
Before finalizing the decision, the NCC conducted extensive consultations with stakeholders across the public and private sectors. Muoka reassured the public that consumer protection remained a top priority, even as the telecom industry faced challenges. The commission’s goal is to balance fair pricing with the long-term sustainability of the telecom sector.
Looking Ahead: Ensuring Growth and Connectivity
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a resilient telecom environment that continues to support connectivity across the nation. The commission’s actions are focused on promoting growth within Nigeria’s digital economy while protecting consumer interests. Going forward, the NCC will continue engaging stakeholders to ensure that telecom services meet the needs of Nigerian citizens.
