NDDC Emergency Repairs on East-West Road in Rivers State

Commencement of Road Repairs

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun emergency repairs on critical sections of the East-West Road, particularly between Ahoada and Ula-Okobo town in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State. This initiative aims to address the deteriorating conditions of the road, which serves as a vital link between Rivers and Bayelsa states.

Inspection and Appeal for Cooperation

Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of NDDC, inspected the ongoing works and called for cooperation from motorists. The repairs are being undertaken by Webster Global Ventures, under the supervision of the NDDC. Dr. Ogbuku highlighted the significant challenges in transporting construction materials to the affected sites due to the road’s poor condition.

Challenges and Emergency Measures

The NDDC’s swift response follows recent assessments that showed the road’s condition had worsened, posing risks to vehicular movement and safety. The operation aims to restore the road’s functionality and ensure safe passage for commuters, particularly heavy-duty vehicles that have been stuck for days.

Support from Federal Ministry of Works

Dr. Ogbuku also noted the support from the Federal Ministry of Works, which is constructing large culverts at sections washed away during the 2022 floods. This collaborative effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure resilience against natural disasters.

Continued Efforts and Future Plans

The NDDC reaffirms its commitment to completing the repairs swiftly. Opeoluwa Adara, the Managing Director of the contracting firm, assured that efforts were being intensified to stabilize the road sections. The ongoing repairs are part of a comprehensive plan to improve infrastructure within the Niger Delta region, linking Rivers, Bayelsa, and Delta states.

Impact on Local Communities and Motorists

The road’s poor condition has not only impeded traffic but has also exposed motorists to security risks, as noted by Malam Sani Ahmed, a truck driver affected by the road’s state. The NDDC’s actions are therefore crucial in ensuring both the economic and physical safety of the road’s users.
