Leaders Demand Immediate Action
The Ndi Igbo community formally petitioned the Federal Government on Thursday, demanding the immediate release of their Lagos chapter leader. Authorities detained the Lagos chapter leader under unclear circumstances, prompting the community to raise concerns about the legality of the action. Notable Igbo leaders and organisations signed the petition, emphasising their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as an unjust detention. The petitioners urged the government to act swiftly, highlighting fairness and respect for constitutional rights as core principles at stake.
Allegations of Unjust Detention
The petition states that authorities detained the Lagos chapter leader last week at a meeting discussing the Igbo community’s concerns.
The community claims the detention is politically motivated and violates the leader’s constitutional rights to freedom of association and expression.
Community’s Growing Frustration
Ndi Igbo leaders voiced strong frustration regarding perceived systemic marginalisation and targeted harassment in Lagos. Chief Emmanuel Nwankwo, a notable Igbo leader in Lagos, declared the detention an attempt to silence and intimidate their leadership.
Calls for Transparency
The petitioners urged the government to provide transparency regarding the charges or allegations leading to the detention. They have also appealed to human rights organisations and international bodies to intervene. “We seek justice, not just for our leader but for the preservation of the rule of law in Nigeria,” the petition read.
Protests Planned Nationwide
The Ndi Igbo community has announced plans to organise peaceful protests across the country if the leader is not released within seven days. “We will not be silent while our rights are trampled upon,” warned Ngozi Amadi, a youth representative, during a press briefing.
Government Yet to Respond
As of now, the Federal Government has not issued a formal statement regarding the petition or the reasons for the leader’s detention. The Ndi Igbo community continues to press for action, emphasising that this issue transcends their group and concerns the fundamental rights of all Nigerians.
