Calls for New Jet for Shettima Amid Economic Hardship
Peter Obi, former Anambra governor and Labour Party candidate, criticised calls for a new jet for Vice President Shettima. Obi argued that purchasing a new jet shows a disregard for Nigeria’s harsh economic conditions affecting many citizens. He expressed these views in a recent post on X, questioning the government’s priorities. Obi directly criticised Borno Assembly Speaker Abdulkareem Lawan for suggesting a new jet should take precedence over pressing issues.
Obi Highlights Nigeria’s Declining Economy
Obi emphasised Nigeria’s economic decline, noting that, as a result, it now ranks among Africa’s worst-governed and the world’s poorest nations. Additionally, he highlighted a drastic fall in Nigeria’s per capita income, which dropped from $1,700 in 2023 to $1,109. Obi described this decline as a clear indication of the country’s worsening poverty crisis. Consequently, he stated, “Focusing on luxuries like a new jet sends the wrong message,” urging leaders to show greater sensitivity to economic hardships.
Frequent Power Failures Cripple Nigerian Businesses
Obi highlighted Nigeria’s frequent grid failures, noting eight collapses this year alone, totalling 105 over the past decade. He argued these power outages severely harm small businesses and Nigerian households. Obi emphasised the urgent need to address these issues instead of prioritising a new jet.
Prudent Spending: Lessons from Indonesia
Obi highlighted Indonesia’s example, noting that, despite robust economic growth, the country postponed buying a presidential aircraft until 2014. He urged Nigerian leaders to adopt this approach, focusing on essential travel rather than luxury expenses, particularly in light of Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
The Role of Public Officials in Economic Revival
Obi urged Nigerian officials to practice financial restraint and avoid unnecessary spending, encouraging focus on critical economic challenges over conveniences. Obi questioned, “Why does the Vice President need a new jet, and what actual benefit does it bring to Nigeria?” He urged leaders to carefully reconsider their priorities, particularly in light of the critical challenges currently facing the country. He believes prioritising public needs over personal luxuries will benefit Nigeria significantly.
Obi’s Vision for a Resurgent Nigeria
Obi urged public officials to shift their focus, expressing hope that, with a more selfless and pragmatic leadership, Nigeria can economically recover. Furthermore, he believes prioritising national needs over personal luxuries is essential. Ultimately, Obi stated, this approach will help create a more stable and prosperous Nigeria.
