The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) announced that Nigerians must pay for the new national identity card due to revenue shortages. Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, explained the payment ensures only those needing the card request it. The decision to require payment aims to address the financial challenges of producing the card.
Avoiding Past Mistakes
Iwegbu highlighted that the previous attempt to distribute free national identity cards faced challenges, with over two million cards produced, many of which were never collected. The NIMC is determined to avoid repeating this mistake, ensuring a more efficient process. The government’s limited resources were also a key factor in the decision to charge for the new card, as Iwegbu stressed the need for more sustainable funding.
Post-Paid Identity Cards to Be Introduced
Mr. Lanre Yusuf, the Director of Information Technology at NIMC, explained that the new ID card would be a post-paid service. Nigerians must first require the card before they can request it, paying for the card at that point. This approach is designed to ensure that the cards are issued only to those who genuinely need them, reducing waste and ensuring that funds are better allocated.
Government Support for the Less Privileged
Yusuf assured that the government has implemented programs to support Nigerians who cannot afford the national ID card fee. While most Nigerians must pay for the new identity card, the government ensures assistance for those in need. These programs help Nigerians who need the card for essential government services despite financial challenges. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to inclusivity and ensuring that all citizens have access to necessary identification.
Partnership with Banks for Easy Access
The new multipurpose national ID card will launch soon, allowing Nigerians to request and collect their cards from participating banks. This partnership with banks aims to streamline the process, enabling citizens to visit any nearby branch. Nigerians can easily request their cards at the closest bank branch through this convenient new system.
Multipurpose Card for Government Services
The new ID card, powered by AfriGO, will serve multiple functions, including identity verification, payment processing, and government access. It will facilitate various government interventions across ministries, departments, and agencies, making it essential for citizen-state interactions. The NIMC partnered with the Central Bank of Nigeria and NIBSS to ensure the card meets modern needs.
