NGO Pays Fines for Inmates to Secure Release in Osun State

Foundation Facilitates Freedom for Inmates at Ilesa Correctional Centre

The Charles Heart Ex-inmates Reformation Foundation paid over N1 million in fines, securing the release of four inmates. This initiative helps individuals unable to pay fines, preventing prolonged imprisonment. The foundation aims to support those facing financial barriers to freedom.

Donations to Improve Transportation for Inmates

In addition to paying fines, the foundation contributed two tyres and a car battery to the correctional centre to improve the transportation of inmates to and from court for trials. This gesture was made in line with the foundation’s goal of easing the logistical challenges faced by correctional facilities.

A Commitment to Legal Assistance for Inmates

Charles Osaghae, Director of the Foundation, emphasized their commitment to providing free legal services to inmates at Ilesa Correctional Centre. His goal is to support inmates lacking legal representation, a common issue in Nigeria’s correctional facilities. Osaghae highlighted the importance of access to legal aid for inmates facing unfair incarceration.

Prior Successes in Other Facilities

Osaghae’s foundation has previously assisted inmates at other Nigerian facilities, including Kirikiri Prison in Lagos and Agodi Correctional Centre in Ibadan. Through similar actions, the foundation has helped release 39 inmates by covering their fines and providing other forms of support to improve their welfare.

Addressing the Challenges in Correctional Centres

In his statement, Osaghae called for more attention from the government to improve the conditions of correctional centres across the country. He emphasized the importance of offering legal representation to inmates who cannot afford it, as many find themselves imprisoned due to their inability to hire lawyers.

Encouraging Private Contributions for Vulnerable Populations

Osaghae urged wealthier individuals in Nigeria to increase their support for vulnerable populations, particularly those in the correctional system. He stressed that the involvement of wealthy Nigerians is crucial to ensuring more people benefit from such charitable efforts, calling on others to step up and offer assistance to those in need.
