Niger Accuses Nigerian Officials of Involvement in Attacks on Pipeline
The Nigerien government accused Nigerian officials and security forces of orchestrating attacks on the Niger-Benin pipeline in Dosso. Niger’s Foreign Affairs Ministry claims the attacks were planned by Nigerian individuals, aided by fugitive members of Niger’s former regime. These actions are condemned as attempts to destabilize Niger and harm its sovereignty.
Diplomatic Protest and Complicit Silence
On December 18, the Nigerien government summoned Nigeria’s chargé d’affaires to protest efforts to destabilize the country. Niger accused Nigerian authorities of staying silent despite pledges to normalize relations, while attacks continued. The protest follows claims that some Nigerian officials were complicit in orchestrating subversive activities to incite violence in Niger.
Concerns Over Foreign Military Presence Near Niger Border
The situation has been further complicated by concerns raised by Niger about the presence of foreign forces near its borders, particularly in areas such as Gigani and Gidan Kata on the Nigerian side. Reports indicate that military camps are being constructed in these locations, raising alarms about potential foreign intervention. Niger, however, has reiterated its commitment to peace and security and expressed a desire to cooperate with other “peace-loving countries” to ensure stability in the region.
Tensions Following July 2023 Military Coup
Relations between Niger and Nigeria have been increasingly strained since a military coup in Niger in July 2023. In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by Nigeria, imposed sanctions on Niger, including border closures and the suspension of electricity supplies. The situation worsened after a report by David Hundeyin in August 2024 suggested that Nigeria’s military, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, had plans to invade Niger. This revelation added to the growing tensions between the two nations.
Efforts for Reconciliation Amid Growing Strain
Despite the escalating tensions, efforts at reconciliation have been ongoing. In August 2024, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, General Christopher Musa, visited Niamey to discuss revitalizing security cooperation between the two nations. The meeting resulted in a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening military collaboration, signaling a desire for de-escalation. However, the recent accusations from Niger highlight the fragile nature of this diplomatic engagement.
Niger’s Commitment to Peaceful Resolution
In response to the rising tensions, Niger has emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region. While it has condemned the alleged subversive acts, the government remains open to dialogue and cooperation with Nigeria and other nations committed to peace. The situation continues to evolve, and observers are closely monitoring the diplomatic and security developments in the coming months.
