Tragedy Strikes Bassa Community
A bomb explosion in Bassa community, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, has claimed the life of one child and injured four others. The children were reportedly playing near the explosive device when it detonated, leaving devastating injuries. The deceased has been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, while the injured victims are undergoing treatment at the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.
Eyewitness Accounts and Injuries
Local residents described the tragic incident as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in conflict-prone areas. Ahmed Almustapha, a resident of Bassa, confirmed that three of the injured children were siblings. He disclosed that three victims had suffered leg amputations, adding, “This is the second explosion this month; the first killed another person on their way to the farm.”
Government Urged to Act

Many farmers fear for their safety, as these incidents deter them from returning to their livelihoods. “We need urgent intervention to ensure our safety and protect our farmlands,” Almustapha pleaded.
Officials Confirm Explosion
Hadiza Kuta, Niger State Commissioner for Transport, confirmed the explosion during a press briefing. She expressed her condolences to the affected families, stating, “One child lost their life, and four others are receiving medical care.” Kuta described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and stressed the need for preventive measures to avoid future tragedies.
Police Await Investigation Results
The Niger State Police Command is yet to release a comprehensive report on the explosion. Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said the command is gathering information to determine the source of the explosive device. Residents, however, suspect that bandits operating in the area may have left the bomb behind.

Despite the tragedy, residents of Bassa community remain hopeful for government intervention to restore normalcy. As the injured children recover, the focus shifts to addressing safety concerns and preventing further loss of life.
