Ethiopian Airlines Withdraws from Nigeria Air Venture

Political Resistance Derails Airline Plans
During an interview with Bloomberg Africa, Bekele voiced his disappointment over Nigerian government opposition to the aviation project. Initially, the project aimed to enhance local and international air travel within Nigeria. Nigerian officials’ reluctance has compelled Ethiopian Airlines to rethink their investment strategy. They are now focusing on other African nations interested in similar aviation partnerships.
Expansion Plans in Other African Nations
Despite the setback in Nigeria, Bekele remains optimistic about opportunities elsewhere on the continent. He mentioned that several other African governments have invited Ethiopian Airlines to either form new airlines through partnerships or manage existing carriers without an equity stake. This strategic pivot aims to strengthen Ethiopian Airlines’ presence across Africa, enhancing connectivity and air travel infrastructure.
Future Partnerships and Investments
Looking ahead, Bekele announced plans to engage with at least two African nations in the next 12 months. Ethiopian Airlines will explore investments in existing operators or establish new airlines. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand the airline’s influence across Africa. The goal is to ensure robust growth and sustainability in the regional aviation sector.
