Nigeria Condemns Israeli Airstrike on Rafah

Strong Reaction from Nigeria

On May 30, 2024, Nigeria, through its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, expressed deep outrage over Israel’s attack on Rafah, as it strongly condemns recent attack on Rafah, Gaza, by Israeli airstrike, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 45 people, predominantly women and children. The Nigerian Government calls it part of a troubling pattern of strikes targeting civilians in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

Pattern of Violence

Ambassador Tuggar emphasized that the May 26 attack on Rafah is just one of several incidents worsening Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. He cited the April Al Shifa Hospital bombing, school bombings in Khan Younis, and March bombings of Firas Market and Nuseirat Camp. Tuggar also highlighted drone attacks on World Central Kitchen aid staff, pointing to severe violations of international humanitarian laws.

Nigeria’s Concerns

The Nigerian government expressed profound concern for the safety and welfare of Gaza’s civilian population. Tuggar condemned the severe humanitarian crisis and the violations of ceasefire agreements. He also condemned the sabotage of aid efforts. He stressed that Nigeria firmly supports preserving the fundamental human rights of Gaza’s vulnerable civilians. Nigeria especially stands for protecting the right to life.

Call for International Action

Tuggar urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts for a swift resolution of the conflict and immediate cessation of violence. He called on Israel, Palestine, the UN, the EU, human rights groups, civil society, world leaders, and the international community. He emphasized prioritizing the protection of innocent lives and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need without obstruction.

International Outcry

The Nigerian government’s stance mirrors a broader international outcry against the escalating violence in the region. The attack on Rafah has drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for a peaceful resolution to protect innocent lives. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) recently ordered Israel to halt military operations in Rafah, release hostages, and ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, Israel has rejected the ruling, asserting its interpretation of the situation.

Impact of the Conflict

The ongoing conflict, ignited by an initial attack on Israel by Hamas, has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides. While Israeli authorities report casualties among their population, Gaza’s health ministry, under Hamas control, has documented substantial civilian casualties. Nigeria’s condemnation of the Rafah airstrike highlights the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict and the protection of human rights.
