Nigeria has officially sought South Africa’s support for full membership in BRICS and the G20. The Nigerian government expressed interest in joining the BRICS New Development Bank. This move aims to enhance Nigeria’s global economic influence. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu made the request during the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission session. The meeting took place in Cape Town, South Africa.
BRICS and G20: Platforms for Economic Growth
South Africa has held the G20 presidency since December 1, 2024, making it a key ally for Nigeria. The G20 consists of the world’s largest economies, and Nigeria’s membership would boost its global economic standing. BRICS, representing 37% of the world’s GDP, has driven significant global economic growth. Nigeria’s full membership in these forums would strengthen its role in global economic policy discussions. This inclusion would particularly benefit Nigeria’s influence in emerging markets.
Nigeria’s Request for Leadership Roles in G20
As part of its bid, Nigeria is not only seeking membership in the G20 and BRICS but is also advocating for leadership roles in thematic discussions during South Africa’s presidency of the G20. This request underscores Nigeria’s ambition to play an active part in shaping the global economic and political landscape. Nigeria’s leadership in these forums could amplify its voice in crucial international matters, from economic reforms to security issues.
Regional Peace and Stability: Nigeria’s Commitment
Nigeria is equally committed to fostering regional peace in Africa. During the ministerial meeting, Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized the country’s role in mediating the ongoing Sudanese conflict. Nigeria, under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, has prioritized peace efforts in Sudan, with a focus on accelerating the peace process. Nigeria’s efforts to resolve conflicts in its region are integral to its broader diplomatic agenda, which includes strengthening its influence in international forums like BRICS and the G20.
Collaboration Between South Africa and Nigeria
The strengthening of ties between Nigeria and South Africa was a central theme during the ministerial meeting. Both countries are working towards deepening their bilateral relations across multiple sectors. Key areas for collaboration include trade, investment, health, education, agriculture, and technology. South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Roland Lamola, reaffirmed that the country would amplify Africa’s voice during its G20 presidency, acknowledging Nigeria’s important role in this process.
Strategic Partnerships for Economic Growth
Further collaboration was discussed, especially in areas like infrastructure development and mining. Nigeria is exploring partnerships with South Africa to enhance its mining sector, particularly through capacity-building programs and the certification of Nigerian mining professionals. This partnership could help boost Nigeria’s mining industry, ensuring that its professionals are globally competitive. The two nations aim to sign new agreements that will solidify their strategic partnership and pave the way for long-term economic growth and stability.
