The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared its intention to stage a nationwide protest on May 7, 2024, in response to the persisting fuel scarcity and electricity crises gripping the nation. NANS, expressing discontentment with the government’s handling of these challenges, stressed the urgent need for prompt action to tackle the dire situation. According to a statement released by the association’s Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, the protest aims to shed light on the adverse impact of the fuel scarcity and electricity crisis on Nigerian students while demanding accountability from key officials deemed responsible for worsening these issues.
NANS has underscored its demand for the removal of certain key officials held responsible for the mismanagement and mishandling of crucial energy resources. Specifically, the association called for the immediate dismissal of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Bayo Adelabu, the Minister for Power. NANS attributes the nation’s turmoil to their leadership, accusing them of failing to effectively manage energy resources, thus exacerbating the crisis plaguing the country.
To ensure broad visibility and impact, the Nigerian Students Association (NANS) has strategically orchestrated the nationwide protest to occur simultaneously across various zones of the country. NANS has assigned specific demonstration locations to each zone, including prominent areas like Abuja Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway. The protest aims to take a unified stance against systemic failures and neglect perpetuating hardships. People view removing Mele Kyari and Honorable Adelabu from their positions as pivotal.
