NiMet Forecasts More Severe Weather Following Flooding

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that more severe weather conditions are imminent, following weeks of devastating floods that have affected many regions across Nigeria. In its latest forecast, the agency predicts heavy thunderstorms and rains across various parts of the country from Tuesday to Thursday. This forecast has raised concerns, as several communities are still struggling to recover from the recent flooding disaster.

Thunderstorms Expected in the North

NiMet’s forecast predicts thunderstorms across the Northeast and Northwest regions, with states such as Bauchi, Kebbi, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, Adamawa, and Kaduna expected to experience severe weather conditions during the morning hours on Tuesday. In addition, the North Central region, including Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger states, is also expected to face thunderstorms. The weather warnings highlight the potential for further disruption in regions already grappling with flood-related challenges.

Southern Nigeria to Experience Moderate Rains

In the southern part of Nigeria, NiMet forecasts moderate rains during the morning hours on Tuesday in states like Ebonyi, Imo, Enugu, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, and Bayelsa. Later in the day, intermittent rains are predicted to sweep across the entire region, bringing a further risk of flooding in vulnerable areas. NiMet has urged residents to take necessary precautions to avoid flood-prone areas and stay alert to weather updates.

Increased Risk of Flooding and Damage

The agency’s prediction of additional heavy rains comes as the country continues to suffer from the impact of earlier floods. Over a million people have been affected by the recent flooding in Maiduguri and other regions. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), more than 200 people have lost their lives due to the floods this year, with the worst-hit areas being Borno, Kano, and Jigawa states. NiMet’s latest forecast is likely to add to these numbers if preventive measures are not taken.

Call for Precautionary Measures

NiMet has advised residents in flood-prone areas to relocate if possible and to follow local authorities’ directives on safety measures. The agency has also stressed the importance of securing homes and properties against high winds and heavy rainfall. In addition, emergency services are on high alert to respond to any incidents caused by the incoming weather systems.

Rising Concern Over Future Floods

As Nigeria braces for more severe weather, the country’s ability to manage future floods and provide adequate support to affected communities will be tested. The combination of climate change and poor infrastructure has exacerbated the flooding problem, making it a recurring crisis each year. NiMet’s warnings underline the urgent need for better flood control measures and disaster preparedness across the nation.
