NiMet Predicts Nationwide Thunderstorms for Three Days

Thunderstorms Expected Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast predicting thunderstorms across various parts of Nigeria for three consecutive days, from Monday, September 23, to Wednesday, September 25, 2024. NiMet’s weather outlook, released in Abuja, forecasts morning thunderstorms on Monday over Sokoto, Kebbi, and Borno states, with more widespread storms expected later in the day across northern states.

Widespread Storms Across Northern States

Later on Monday, NiMet expects thunderstorms to affect additional states, including Yobe, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, and Zamfara. The agency also forecasts storms in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, and Kwara, with heavy rains anticipated in the southwestern inland states such as Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ogun.

Heavy Rainfall in the South and Coastal States

NiMet predicts rainfall in the southwestern and coastal regions, with Lagos, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states likely to experience morning showers. Later in the day, thunderstorms will intensify in the southern and central regions, including Enugu, Edo, Ebonyi, and Abia states.

Precautions Against Urban Flooding

NiMet has advised residents in urban areas to be cautious of possible flooding due to heavy downpours. NiMet advises residents to avoid flood-prone areas, as strong winds will precede the thunderstorms, particularly in regions most affected by the forecasted weather conditions. The agency also stressed the importance of adhering to safety advisories issued by local authorities.

Advice for Public and Airline Operators

The agency called on the public and airline operators to stay informed by consulting NiMet’s weather reports and forecasts regularly. This will allow for proper planning and minimise disruption to operations, especially in regions expected to experience severe weather. NiMet recommended that residents in affected areas visit their website for up-to-date weather information.
