NLC Indefinite Strike: FG Pleads with NLC as Deadline Looms

The Federal Government has appealed to Organised Labour (NLC) to reconsider its impending indefinite strike starting Monday, June 3, 2024, over the minimum wage dispute. The strike, in protest against the government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000, poses significant disruptions.

Government Appeals to Labour

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, urged Organised Labour to prioritise the masses’ interest. He emphasised that industrial action is not the solution, highlighting the government’s efforts to negotiate a new minimum wage. Additionally, Mohammed stressed the importance of Labour as partners in Project Nigeria and appealed for their understanding.

Strike Announcement

Organised Labour declared a nationwide strike beginning Monday, June 3, 2024. NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC counterpart Festus Osifo expressed disappointment over the Federal Government’s failure to pass a new National Minimum Wage Act and reverse the electricity tariff hike. They criticised the government’s lack of commitment and noted the absence of key officials during crucial meetings.

Labour’s Ultimatum and Government’s Response

During the May Day celebration, Organised Labour issued an ultimatum demanding the conclusion of the minimum wage negotiation by the end of the month. However, the government has not shown significant progress. Labour demanded the government reverse the electricity tariff hike and categorisation of consumers into bands, warning of an indefinite strike if demands are not met.

Potential Impact on Essential Services

The planned strike could disrupt essential services, as key unions in the power, oil, and gas sectors vow to join the action. NUPENG, PENGASSAN, and NUEE officials confirmed their participation, raising concerns about fuel scarcity and nationwide blackouts. While airport and customs workers await directives, the situation underscores the urgency for a resolution.
