The Federal High Court in Abuja rejected Nnamdi Kanu’s plea for bail or a transfer from the Department of State Security Service custody to prison or house arrest. Justice Binta Nyako, the trial Judge, dismissed the request, citing its lack of merit and previous dismissal.
In her verdict, Justice Nyako underscored Kanu’s breach of bail terms when he absconded previously, highlighting the consequential discharge of his sureties. These sureties, who had vouched for him in his prior bail petition, were released from their obligations as they could not ascertain his whereabouts.
Justice Nyako informed Kanu that his sole option for recourse was to appeal the ruling at the Court of Appeal, rejecting his lead counsel’s assertion about the Supreme Court’s position on his bail revocation. Despite the counsel’s assertion, Justice Nyako clarified that her examination of the Supreme Court judgment did not align with his claim.
The Judge’s guidance to Kanu underscores the procedural steps available to him within the legal system while indicating her disagreement with the interpretation provided by his legal representative. This exchange highlights the complexity of legal arguments and the importance of accurate understanding of precedent in judicial proceedings.
The court’s decision marks a significant development in Kanu’s legal battle and sets the stage for further legal proceedings.
