Nnamdi Kanu’s N1 Billion Claim Against FG Rejected

On Monday, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja rejected Nnamdi Kanu’s human rights lawsuits along with his N1 billion damages claim against the Federal Government.

Allegations by Kanu

Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), had filed the suit alleging violations of his fundamental rights during his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS). His claims included accusations that the DSS and the Attorney-General of the Federation hindered his legal team’s access to him, which he argued obstructed his ability to prepare a proper defense for his ongoing trial. He claimed the DSS and its Director General restricted his legal team’s access to him, hampering his defence preparations.

Judgment Delivered

The court’s dismissal of the lawsuit signifies a significant legal setback for Kanu and his advocates. In his judgment, Justice Omotosho concluded that Nnamdi Kanu’s N1 billion claim did not provide convincing evidence. Specifically, the court found no proof that his interactions with his lawyers were obstructed or that the DSS eavesdropped on his conversations, which Kanu had claimed breached his right to a fair hearing. This judgment denies Kanu the substantial monetary compensation.

Federal Government’s Position

The Federal Government has consistently argued that Kanu’s detention is legal and essential for national security. This court decision supports the government’s stance, underscoring its efforts to address security issues linked to IPOB’s activities.
