Northern Elders Forum Condemns Electricity Tariff Hike

In a scathing rebuke to the recent decision by the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to increase electricity tariffs, the Northern Elders Forum (N.E.F) condemns the electricity tariff hike move as a reckless act that disregards the welfare of the Nigerian populace.

The N.E.F, represented by Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, voiced grave concerns over the tariff hike’s impact on the struggling populace. They highlighted the growing gap between the rich and poor, urging reconsideration of the decision. The forum urged the government to promptly reconsider the ill-conceived decision, considering the dire economic circumstances of most Nigerians.

The N.E.F’s reaction comes on the heels of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (N.E.R.C) announcing an upward adjustment in electricity tariffs specifically targeting Band A customers, who enjoy a 20-hour daily power supply.

Furthermore, emphasizing the breakdown of the new tariff, the N.E.F’s statement outlined an alarming burden that the average Nigerian would bear in affording electricity. Under the revised plan, N5,400 is needed for 24-hour electricity daily, totaling N162,000 monthly and N1,971,000 yearly.

“These exorbitant amounts are unaffordable for most Nigerians, already grappling with economic hardship and trying to make ends meet.”

The forum further criticized the government for perpetuating economic oppression through such steep electricity tariffs, warning that it would only serve to widen the gap between the rich and the poor in Nigeria. They emphasized the potential security threats stemming from exacerbated socioeconomic disparities.

Moreover, the N.E.F accused the government of lacking empathy towards its citizens, opting instead to exploit them for personal gain.

Urging immediate reconsideration, the N.E.F called on Nigerians to demand accountability, stressing the government’s duty to serve, not exploit.
