Technical Committee Formed
Northern senators, led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, launched a technical committee to review controversial tax reform bills. Ladan Salihu, spokesperson for the League of Northern Democrats, announced this on Friday in Abuja. The committee includes legal, economic, and academic experts who will assess the reforms. They aim to provide a comprehensive review to guide legislative decisions on the proposed bills.
Regional Concerns Emerge
The tax reform bills have sparked widespread debate, with governors from the 36 states urging the Federal Government to suspend the legislation for further consultations. In a recent statement, Borno State Governor Prof Babagana Zulum called for outright rejection of the bills, arguing they could severely harm the northern region’s economy. Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stressed the need for transparency and equity in evaluating the bills.
Purpose of the Review
Salihu explained that the review committee would address concerns raised by stakeholders, aiming to create a balanced perspective on the reforms. The committee is expected to publish its findings in an accessible electronic and tabular format within one week. This report will be shared with policymakers, legislators, the media, and the public to foster an informed discussion on the tax reform bills.
Key Figures in the League of Northern Democrats
The League of Northern Democrats, founded earlier this year by Dr Umar Ardo, includes influential northern figures such as Lieutenant General Alwali Kazir (retd), former Chief of Army Staff General Martin Luther Agwai (retd), and former Vice President Namadi Sambo. Senator Shekarau serves as the group’s protem chairman, with former House of Representatives member Emmanuel Jime as secretary.
Proposed Benefits of the Review
According to Salihu, the committee’s recommendations aim to ensure that the reforms support equitable economic growth and sustainable development. The League has assured Nigerians of its commitment to advocating policies that prioritise fairness and prosperity across the nation. The organisation also plans to use the review process to address broader concerns about economic justice and unity.
Future Implications
The outcome of the committee’s review is expected to influence legislative decisions significantly, as well as public perception of the bills. If successful, the recommendations could reshape Nigeria’s tax landscape while safeguarding the economic interests of the northern region.
