Power Outages Affecting Residents Resolved
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully restored electricity to seven states in Northern Nigeria, which had been severely affected by the vandalisation of the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line. This restoration follows a significant nine-day blackout impacting communities in Lafia, Makurdi, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, and Gombe.
Successful Repair Efforts
As of 4:56 PM on October 30, 2024, TCN reported the successful repair of the 330kV Ugwuaji-Apir transmission line 1. The announcement was made by Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN. The restoration marks a crucial step towards addressing the electricity crisis that has left many residents without power for over a week.
Vandalism Causes Power Disruption
The power outages began on October 22, when the 330 kV Ugwuaji–Apir double circuit transmission lines tripped due to a fault, affecting the North-East, North-West, and parts of North-Central Nigeria. After two days, TCN engineers identified the cause of the fault but faced challenges due to insecurity that hindered repair efforts. This prompted President Bola Tinubu to order additional security for the TCN team.
Ongoing Restoration Efforts
In a recent statement, TCN confirmed that while power supply has been restored to several states, restoration efforts are ongoing. The company indicated that work would soon commence on the second 330kV transmission line. All necessary materials for repairs are prepared, and TCN is ensuring site security to protect personnel during the restoration process.
Gratitude to Residents
TCN expressed appreciation to residents affected by the power outages for their patience during this challenging time. The company reiterated its commitment to swiftly complete repairs and enhance power supply in the affected regions. They acknowledged the importance of electricity in daily life and assured citizens of their efforts to improve the situation.
Blackout Still Affects Additional States
Despite the partial restoration, PUNCH Online reports that several other states, including Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kogi, Benue, Jigawa, and Katsina, continue to experience complete blackouts. TCN is focused on addressing these issues as part of their broader strategy to enhance power distribution across the region.
